Vaccine Season: Protecting Yourself and Your Loved Ones

Oct 16, 2024

As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, we’re reminded that cold and flu season is upon us. But in recent years, this season has come to mean more than just the flu. COVID-19, while not yet fully settling into a predictable seasonal pattern, continues to circulate, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is also on the rise. With infectious illnesses more likely to spread as we gather indoors during the colder months, now is a great time to think about vaccines and how they can protect you and your loved ones.

Flu Vaccines

One of the most familiar vaccines is the flu shot, which is recommended for everyone each fall. Flu season typically peaks in December through February, though in 2022, we saw an unusually early peak. This is why we recommend getting your flu vaccine between mid-October and early November. This timing ensures your body has enough time to build immunity before flu season peaks, giving you protection when it matters most. The flu shot is formulated each year to protect against the most common strains, helping to reduce your chances of severe illness, hospitalization, and even death.

COVID-19 Boosters

The COVID-19 booster helps bolster immunity, as protection against severe illness wanes after illness and vaccination, particularly for older adults and those with chronic conditions. While COVID-19 has not yet settled into a true seasonal pattern, cases can spike during the colder months when people are indoors more often. The COVID-19 booster can be safely administered at the same time as the flu shot, so you can tackle both at once and stay protected as the season begins.
